Who We Are

The Winkler & District Health Care Board Inc. is a charitable, not for profit organization founded in 1996. It promotes and actively supports community health care services within the City of Winkler and surrounding district.  The Health Care Board works in collaboration with other health care service providers including Boundary Trails Health Centre and Menzies Medical Centre in Morden and Southern Health-Santé Sud.

The Board consists of appointed members from the City of Winkler, neighbouring municipalities of Stanley, Rhineland and Roland, Medical Centre physicians, Eden Health Care Services, Salem Personal Care Home, and Winkler Chamber of Commerce.

The Board’s primary role is to provide the buildings and capital infrastructure to sustainably support the operation of the CW Wiebe Medical Centre clinic. In addition to the rent from the physician group, the Board receives annual grants totalling $260,000 from the City of Winkler, and the RM’s of Rhineland, Roland and Stanley.  This supports the overall objective of providing effective primary clinical care close to home.

What We Do

The Medical Centre currently contracts with 40 physicians, surgeons and 90 other clinical and support staff in collaboration with the Health Care Board.  It has developed into a leading health care organization within Manitoba, working on the forefront of provincial initiatives such as My Health Teams, among others.  All our doctors also provide emergency and acute services at the regional Boundary Trails Health Centre.

One of the more urgent and immediate concerns for the health system is retaining and recruiting new physicians and other health care providers to our region.  Population growth as well as the recent loss of several physicians has brought us to the current critical situation.   A recent survey has revealed a conservative estimate that over 6500 community residents are without a designated family doctor.  This is not unlike what the community was facing in the late 1990’s when the Health Care Board was created.

Some current health service priorities for the medical centre include:

  • Accessible primary care to all who need it.
  • Accessible same day (not emergency) service
  • Pediatric services to support level 2 nursery (part of BTHC expansion)
  • Women’s health
  • Teen Clinic
  • Addictions and Mental Health
  • Ophthalmology

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

As a registered charitable organization, Winkler & District Health Care Board can receive and receipt charitable contributions.  Please consider supporting improved access to health care close to home.  Thank you!
